Sion Power, the global leader in the development of a new generation of high-energy, rechargeable lithium batteries for portable power is currently searching for a Vacuum Deposition Scientist/Engineer to be based at its research and development facility in Tucson, Arizona. Sion’s exciting new technology is based on the elements lithium and sulfur which combined yield a battery system with the highest theoretical gravimetric and volumetric energy densities of any battery couple and offer significant improvements in performance over current rechargeable batteries.

this position will perform vacuum web coating process development work related to lithium sulfur batteries. Additionally, the successful candidate will assist in the design, construction and baselining of a new vacuum web coater for multi-layer coatings and, upon completion, assume primary responsibility for process development on the new coater. The successful candidate will operate and oversee operation and maintenance of vacuum systems and vacuum web coating systems in particular. The candidate will take primary responsibility for daily operation of the R&D vacuum lab and the new prototype production coater by scheduling experiments, operating and maintaining the equipment, maintaining inventory levels and directing a staff of technicians and engineers.

Qualifications Include: Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Engineering, Physics or related discipline, and at least five (5) years work experience in research and development in the field of vacuum deposition. The candidate should have a sound technical background and knowledge of basic chemistry, materials science and physics with fundamental skills in carrying out and interpreting chemical analysis and characterizations of materials and coatings. Must be capable of performing independent data analysis including ability to make observations, apply reason, draw scientific conclusions and make appropriate recommendations. Also needs to be computer literate with excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Skills Include: Experience in vacuum coating system design, modification, maintenance and safety with particular emphasis on thermal evaporation, DC and RF sputtering, and plasma treatment technologies along with reactive deposition processes in general.
